A Brief Summary of the Book

Innovation.  It is the word upon which entrepreneurs make their living.  It is the buzzword that today’s business world is determined to represent.  Yet, for an ideal that is so pivotal to success in the business world, it is ironic how little we can articulate about this topic.  The process for generating new business has been equated to a “fuzzy art.”  One of the most highly regarded processes for generating new ideas –brainstorming- hasn’t fallen out of favor in over six decades.  To be blunt, our methods are outdated and our understanding of the topic is lacking.  For a society that prizes a topic so dearly, it is time that we start to truly understand it.  The Innovator's Sourcebook was written to provide an actionable, how-to approach to innovation and generating new business ideas that will fill the void.

Many resources exist regarding how to start a business and how to put an idea into motion, but few focus on the precursors to those processes; how to harness innovation and generate great business ideas.  Specifically, people want to know; how does innovation happen?  why does it happen?  what are the common patterns in great ideas?  Then, how do we use this information to develop great ideas for ourselves?  The Innovator's Sourcebook was written to provide detailed answers to these questions.  It is about where to look for sources of innovation and techniques for generating novel new ventures.

The little amount of quality information that does exist on the topic of innovation is scattered all over the business world in various textbooks, trade books, magazines and on the Internet.  On top of being fragmented, most of the advice is written for managers, economists and CEOs.  Few sources are written with entrepreneurs in mind.  Few sources focus on the millions of people looking for their opportunity to own a company, starting from scratch.  With The Innovator's Sourcebook, I sought to change all of that.  The book was written in order to consolidate all of the worthwhile advice that does exist, expand on it and give the body of knowledge a consistent point of view.  The Innovator’s Sourcebook was written to give entrepreneurs a logical whole of what innovation “is” and for once, how to capture it.

Whether you are looking for the sources of great business ideas, the right mindset or just trying to get a handle on the topic of innovation, it’s all here.  The Innovator's Sourcebook is a resource that I wish I had to refer to over the past eight years and I believe you will feel the same way.
